AVACHOYA Katsina "kachina of speckled corn" (Colton 122) Cottonwood (Populus Deltoides, also known as American poplar), pigments, feathers. North America, United States, Arizona, Hopi. Wear and patina of age, reported base. H : 23 cm Around 1950/60 Provenance and geographical origin according to the owner: Santa Fe, B.Will Knappen Gallery, acquired in the 1990s. The helmet mask, without ears, surmounted by a tuft of feathers, is painted on a yellow and red background, separated by a vertical band ending in tiers on a tube mouth. The step is reversed from traditional Avachoya representations, probably intentionally. The body is painted pink, in keeping with tradition, the shoulders covered with yellow drips, the arms glued along the torso. The kilt is white, with a raised belt at the waist and what appears to be a preparatory outline of the side belt. The legs are widely separated, with green and red moccasins in relief. It is possible that this trade doll was not completely finished and remained in a semi-preparatory state.
