HORO MANA katsina Kachina " girl who styles her hair up " (Colton 101) Cottonwood (Populus Deltoides, also known as American poplar), pigments, fabric, feather. North America, United States, Arizona, Hopi. Old wear and patina, legs missing. H : 34 cm Circa 1940/60 Provenance and geographical origin according to the owner: Taos, acquired in the 1970s. Horo mana wears a mask with a white background encircled by two large eyes, a rectangular mouth with a large red cloth tongue hanging out. The body wears the arms together along the torso, the shoulders covered with a red cloth shawl. The kilt bears traces of white pigment for the background, with a ritual side-scarf belt also in red cloth. This rather rare kachina, described by Fawkes in 1903 and then by Stephen in 1936, is usually shown alongside Nuvakchina, spirit of the snow. Carrying a yucca brush, she ruffles the hair of spectators. She symbolizes the cold wind
