TSITOTO Katsina Kachina flower (Colton 45) Light wood, pigments, string. North America, USA, Arizona, Zuni. Very slight rubbing and small missing parts on the hands. H : 19 cm Around 1950/60 Provenance and geographical origin according to the owner: USA, acquired in the 2000s. Tsitoto is wearing a half white and half grey bag mask decorated with vertical stripes, slit eyes and a long beak. On the back of the mask, a crown of feathers is evoked. The torso is painted on a pink background and wears a figurative necklace and a green scarf. The arms are articulated and stretched forward. The kilt is white, with a red belt finely painted with geometric motifs, and overlaid in the front with a black apron decorated with rain clouds and staircases of the sky from which lightning starts. At the back, a fox skin protruding from the apron decorated in the same way as on the front. Symbol of the flowering, Tsitoto appears on the three Mesa during the Powamu ceremony (bean ceremony which takes place in February) and during the Angk'wa dance (night dance of March). He also appears during the Pachavu, and the Palölôkong (dance of the Feathered Serpent). He holds in his hands yucca rods with which he whips the spectators who come too close to him.
