HOLOLO Katsina Guardian Kachina (Colton 103) Light wood, pigments, fabric, wool. North America, USA, Arizona, Hopi. Minimal wear, slight lacks at the bow and at the lateral belt, small restoration at the right foot, crack at the left shoulder. H : 31 cm Circa 1950/60. Provenance and geographical origin according to the owner : USA, acquired in the 2000s. Superb trade kachina of the Hololo dancer, with very detailed treatment. The mask is painted with a blue/green background, the prominent eyes to watch, the oversized ears are dotted with red and yellow circles. The mask has a sculpted feathered headpiece. The muzzle is prominent with visible painted teeth. The torso is painted red, the shoulders yellow. The arms are detached from the body in a dancing attitude, wearing yellow bands on the forearms finished with white hands holding a rattle and a bow, the forearms are yellow with white hands holding a bow and a rattle. The kilt is painted with a white background, ultra realistic, with an embossed side sash belt, protruding from the bottom of the kilt and painted with geometric patterns. In the back, a fox skin in relief. The legs are thin, separated and fitted with very detailed blue/green moccasins. Hololo is a protective spirit with huge eyes and ears. He can be seen at spring festivals in kivas as well as in mixed dances. As a guardian, he carries a bow and arrows as well as a rattle. A true sculpture of the living dancer, the quality of detail in this piece makes it an instructive document on the clothing of the Hololo dancer.
