SIP-IKNE Katsina
(Colton 152)
Wood, pigments, feathers, vegetable fibers, cord.
North America, United States, Arizona or New Mexico, Pueblo.
Strong wear, discolorations, base reported.
H : 30 cm
Provenance according to the owner: acquired in the 1970s in Taos.
Astonishing kachina wearing a mask with a yellow background and eyes overloaded with a red band. The temples keep the traces of the directional gourd flowers. Trace of a collar made of vegetable fiber (perhaps hemp). The torso is surprisingly hollowed out, framed by two arms attached to the trunk. The legs are separated, slightly staggered in a dance attitude.
Sip-Ikne is a known kachina, which appears during the bean festival dances (Powamu) on the first mesa, as well as in the regular dances.
