RÜGAN katsina
Kachina of the corn dance (Colton 60)
Softwood (probably Cottonwood), pigments, wool, feathers.
North America, United States, probably New Mexico.
Wear to the edges, slight lacks and restorations, reported base.
H : 25 cm
About 1950/60
Remarkable kachina, very finely executed, almost mannerist in the treatment of the drapery of the kilt and in the musculature. He wears a helmet mask with a blue background enhanced by two red and yellow bands, the mouth is tubular, the ears large and red.
The body, painted on a black background, is treated in relief, emphasizing the musculature of the dancer. The arms are detached from the body, slightly bent in a dancing attitude. The kilt, also treated in relief for the drapery, has a belt with a side scarf pleated on the side and a fox skin sculpted in the mass at the back. The legs, very thin, are widely detached and fitted with green and red boots.
This piece, with a very careful finish, is the work of an experienced artist.
