HONAN katsina Badger Kachina (Colton 89) Cottonwood (Populus Deltoides, also known as American poplar), pigments, cord, feather, wool. North America, United States, Arizona, Hopi. Wear and patina of age. H : 21 cm Around 1950/60 Provenance and geographical origin according to the owner: Santa Fe, B.Will Knappen Gallery, acquired in the 1990s. Honan wears a mask with a brown background separated by a green median band, the eyes are tapered and topped by yellow eyebrows. The cheeks are loaded with traces of badger, the protruding muzzle is surrounded by wool. The body, painted in white and yellow, has the arms together. The kilt, white, is hemmed with green. The legs are separated and carved in a concave shape. Kachina of the badger spirit, Honan is one of the dancers of the mixed dances. He is also found in the water snake ceremony. He was described by Fawkes in 1903 and by Stephen in 1936.
