Il Tribunale della S. Rota Romana. Rome, Bernabó 1717. fol. [10] pp, 331 pp, [7] pp. half leather. Very rare writing by Italian artist Domenico Bernini (1657-1723) on the Sacra Rota Romana, one of the highest courts of the Roman Catholic Church. It was established in the 12th century to hold court in representation of the Pope and to render judgments in the context of canon law. It was considered the most incorruptible court of the time until the 17th century, especially because of the high standards that the judges had to meet. It still exists today and judges all clergy, including bishops, to whom no other authority than the Pope is superior; furthermore, it acts as the ordinary court of appeal of the Roman Catholic Church. - Without portrait. But complete with 7, including 6 old colored, partially folded plates depicting the papal court ceremonies, engraved by Hubertus Vincent after Giuseppe Severoni. With decorative initials and head vignettes. Former library copy with stamp inside and library signature on cover in good condition. Binding rubbed and bumped. Dirt title and title page with lack. Title page with ink stains. Paper darkened and foxed as usual for age. Book block waterstained in places, especially large areas on the first pages. Binding tight, text clean. Deficiencies have been taken into account in the price.
