The photograph is part of a series of portraits of the writer made in 1927 by
Berenice Abbott (1898-1991), then Man Ray's assistant in Paris.
In the collection Opéra, published the same year, Jean Cocteau inserted a poem entitled:
Les Photographies de Bérénice.

Journalist and writer, Robert de Saint Jean (1901-1987) was the companion of Julien Green.
The remarkable edition of the complete Diary of Julien Green, given by Guillaume Fau in 2019 according to the autograph manuscripts acquired by the Bibliothèque nationale de France, underlines the central role he played in the life of the American writer.
On verso, note from Jean-Éric Green (1930-2015), the writer's adopted son, indicating that the photograph given by Jean Cocteau to R. de Saint Jean was offered by the latter to Julien Green. (Sale catalog, Julien Green, un siècle d'écriture, Geneva, 2011, nº 104.)
