Painter and draughtswoman of Austrian origin, Marie Elisabeth Wrede (1898-1981) lived in Paris where she was a student of Fernand Léger and Amédée Ozenfant. She was a close friend of Paul Valéry.
The portrait of Borges that she drew appears on the frontispiece of the collection Ficciones (1944).
