ONE OF THE TWO KNOWN SETS OF PROOFS: SEIZED FROM THE PRINTER, THE HOMOEROTIC NOVEL BY FRANÇOIS-PAUL ALIBERT NEVER APPEARED.
Poet and playwright, François-Paul Alibert (Carcassonne 1873 - 1953) was close to André Gide, from 1907, and Eugène Rouart, his "frank comrades", accomplices of their interloping trips in the Southwest. His erotic trilogy includes Le Supplice d'une queue, published under the cloak in 90 copies (1931), Le Fils de Loth, undoubtedly his masterpiece (La Musardine, 2002) and this
Couronne de pines whose edition was entirely destroyed, following a seizure of Customs.
Only two proof copies remain: this one, with several autograph corrections, and a second, sold on May 31, 2016, with only three autograph corrections and underlined passages. On the latter, the author indicated: "Did not actually appear in bookstores (Single copy of proof sheets)."
Thus, Alibert himself seemed unaware that a second set of proofs had been saved.
A perfect copy in morocco lined by Huser: it is enriched with 10 original ink drawings, one of them enhanced with watercolor.
Unsigned, they seem to be the work of the Catalan painter and illustrator Pere Creixams (1893-1965) whose two engravings outside the text adorn the other known copy of proofs.
