Through these two portraits of Louis Marcoussis, a cubist painter, and Antoni Stonimski, a poet, we find the avant-garde approach of August Zamoyski. The Polish-born sculptor, who graduated in philosophy, was one of the founders of the "Formists" group of Polish abstract artists. Before enjoying an international career, he moved to Paris in 1923 and frequented the artistic Montparnasse, including the cubist painter Louis Marcoussis. He participated in the most important Parisian events such as the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in 1925 and the International Exhibition of 1937 at which he won the "Grand Prix of Sculpture". Although surrounded by the most influential artists, Zamoyski developed his own artistic language. Attached to the human figure, he made numerous heads, mainly of his artist friends, in order to "translate the quivering complexity of beings from all angles". While devoting himself to direct carving and chiseling, a legacy of his training in the workshop of a Polish blacksmith during his adolescence, he seeks absolute harmony through an almost extreme purity of form and a particular attention to the play of light.
