Ray, Man o.T. Figurative scene. 1915. gouache in shades of gray on brown cardboard. 52 x 45 cm. Signed and dated. Mounted under passepartout and decoratively framed under glass. - In good condition. Provenance: - Private property Berlin - formerly private property West Germany - Lempertz, auction 04.12.1993, lot 305. - The motif of dancing figures forms an important position in Man Ray's early work. He dealt with it several times. Apart from the motif of the Three Graces, known in art history through the reception of antiquity, Man Ray's figures in motion stand for the further development of his art. From the increasing dissolution of his representational painting announces the tendency of turning to abstract painting, influenced by the encounter with Marcel Duchamp. In this respect, the year 1915 is seminal for the artist's further work, symbolizing the change from representational to abstract. The "Figurative Scene" is an example of this.
