EGYPT or SYRIA Mamluk period, 16th-17th century Large Mamluk basin Circular basin with slightly truncated cone-shaped sides, made of tin-plated red copper, with engraved decoration of a large central register composed of roundels and poly-lobed cartouches formed of intertwined ribbons in which stylized vegetal motifs and arabesques are chiseled, alternating with panels inscribed with Arabic blessings in naskh script. The border of braided bands and frieze of plant scrolls on the edge. Owner's mark: Hajji Mohammed ibn Hajji Ali. Year AH 1107 / 1695-96 D. 33.5 cm; H: 19.5 cm A basin from the madina collection (inv. no. m10) with very similar decoration and almost identical diameter is published in the exhibition catalog by esin Atil, renaissance of islam. Art of the mamluks, smithsonian institution, Washington, D.c., 1981, cat. 38, p. 107. A very large basin, 49.5 cm in diameter, attributable to the Mamluk sultan Qaitbay (1468-96) was sold in london at christie's, 17 April 2007, lot 28.
