Attributed to Francesco PITTONI (1654 - 1724)
Judith holding the head of Holofernes and Abra
Rectangular oval canvas
123 x 98,5 cm
We compare our painting to the two oval canvases in the Udine museum (former Walter Mio collection), Cleopatra and Seneca (signed and dated 1714). We find the same framing and the same treatment of the tight and undulating draperies.
Francesco Pittoni was the uncle and teacher of Giovanni Battista Pittoni in the early years of the 18th century.
Registered in the registers of the College of Venetian painters at the end of 1684, Francesco Pittoni was certified "master" in 1690. From 1720 to 1721, he made a trip to Paris in the company of other painters such as Rosalba Carriera and Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini. He died without a son in 1724.
