Portrait of miser
Oil on canvas, 16X14 cm
The quality of the work is very high, the detail of the spectacles with the chipped lens and the pictorial rendering of the complexion being enough to grasp the refinement of the execution, so much so that the traditional attribution to Jan Lievens and the Haarlem school is not surprising. However, the character of the drafts leads to an Italian author and to grasp close similarities with the works of Giuseppe Nogari (Venice, 1699 - 1763), consequently suggesting a Venetian genesis of the painting. Indeed, the image evokes the Carrara Academy's Portrait of an Old Woman (see F. Rossi, Accademia Carrara. Bergamo. Catalogo dei dipinti, Milan, 1979, p. 352) or again the Ritratto di vecchia formerly in the Algranti Collection (cf. Zeri Archive, no. 66813), but there is no doubt that in this case we are in the presence of a very refined execution, also confirmed by the small size.
