The Expulsion of Hagar
Oil on canvas, 92.5X110 cm
Provenance:
Amsterdam, Christie's, May 6, 1998, lot 30 (as Hendrick Mommers)
Hendrik Mommers was a pupil of Berchem and, like the latter, active in Rome where he is documented between 1644 and 1646. He painted mainly pastoral and market scenes, his backgrounds often featuring ruins of ancient buildings or the Roman countryside. To the painter's style, in addition to the subject matter, refer the drafting and typology of the figures and the manner of drapery. In our case his Nordic training is quite evident in the way he delineates the landscape and the accuracy in painting the still life pieces.
