The river of pearls, circa 1860
Folded, pocket-sized fan with a so-called "telescopic" system that allows the strands to slide inside the leaf to reduce its size once the fan is closed. The double sheet of paper painted with gouache on one side of two views of the port of Hong Kong and its hills with the arrival of many ships, including junks, sailing ships flying French flags, and a steamship. In the center, sixteen figures in silk clothing and ivory heads* enliven a palace scene. The rich border mixes bats and various symbols of happiness on a silver background.
On the other side, large view of pavilions opened by terraces animated by 30 characters wearing silk clothes in relief and an ivory head*.
