§ Small 8vo; 644, [12] pages., Sign. a-z1-8 (first two leaves misnumbered), A-R1-8, S1-2, *3-8 (the last 6 leaves belong to S but are numbered with *); woodcut vignette on title page, small woodcut portrait of Dante, 3 full-page woodcut illustrations. Contemporary brown calf, gilt medallion inscribed into double gilt fillets on both covers (faded), hinges skilfully restored, a very fresh and well margined copy with printing mirror often “reglè”. An intriguing copy in contemporary binding, rare on the market.
Delightful and uncommon edition of Dante’s Divina Commedia, printed in Lyon in small size by Guillaume Rouillé (1518-1589), a former pupil of Gabriel Giolito de' Ferrari. One of the most prominent humanist bookseller-printers in 16th-century Lyon, he established his business in this city in 1545. Rouillé invented the pocket book format called the sextodecimo.
