ALFIE KÜLPER (Stockholm, 1982). "Midnight embrace family". Set of two pillows and a tapestry hand-embroidered with Nepalese wool. Sizes: 80 x 60 cm; 100 x 70 cm; 120 x 120 cm. We grow in a flat as we grow in a garden, collecting objects, emotions and relationships. Organising it as it suits our personalities, letting it grow into what we call home. Using the traditional techniques of textile art and heirloom tapestry, "Midnight embrace family" tells a story of love and trust, of a safe place to take refuge in uncertain times. An embrace that blossoms and grows, building the foundations of a future. The artist and fashion designer Alfhild "Alfie" Külper studied at Central Saint Martins University of the Arts in London. She has been living in Amsterdam for 10 years and combines her work for the fashion house Viktor&Rolf with an artistic practice focusing on soft, emotionally charged textile pieces. "My path to textile art started with a sudden but very strong longing. I started dreaming of making these pieces and it became an obsession. Only later did I realise that the intense longing to make something physically soft was linked to a longing for a more empathetic and emotional feeling. Tactility felt like a counterpart to our digital life. And the organic forms and slow, intuition-based process felt like a protest against the dominance of cold logic and hyper-capitalism". The works depict abstract memories of nature and figures.
