Jean-Paul Riopelle enrolled at the École du Meuble in 1943. It was with professor Paul-Émile Borduas that he produced his first abstract works. With a few classmates, the artist worked in a shed in Montreal, laying the foundation for the future group of "Automatistes". This work is a precious testimony of this passage with the reuse of a paper from the time when the painter was still a student.
