The Table of the Cross represented in the ceremonies of the Holy Mass. Together the treasure of the devotion to the sufferings of Nre. S. J. C. le tout enrichi de belles figures. Paris, Mazot, 1651. In-8, burgundy morocco, spine with ornate nerves, fleur-de-lys on the covers framed with a double lace and gilt fillets (period binding). (1) f. title frontispiece (by J. Colin representing Christ in the garden of olives), 1 suite of 33 (out of 35) engravings of ceremonies and scenes of the Passion engraved on the verso of the ff., 1 suite of 38 (out of 39) engravings of orations and litanies by J. Collin, portrait of Christ and the Virgin and 2 pp. of litanies, 1 suite of 20 engravings recto-verso 'Histoire de David', (1) p. Privilege. Very charming work published by the engraver and printer François Mazot, entirely engraved on copperplate, including the curious scenes of the mass featuring the officiant standing in front of the altar throughout the service, to which respond opposite the full-length portraits of the apostles, saints and great dignitaries of the Church. Missing: the dedication page, the page with the portrait of the dedicatee Charles de L'Aubespine on the r°, the notice to the reader on the v°, the title page of the Litanies, by Jean Collin. Very well done, the work was considered in its time as precious and its copies worthy to be entrusted to the best Parisian bookbinders. For this reason, it appears in the most important collections of the 19th century. Covers and corners worn, boards bent, paper missing on some margins.
