This photograph is a variant of the motif published in the book editions of “The Germans”, in which the sage gesture of the soldier standing on the left overhangs the profile figure of the officer with felt hat. Here Burri plays with the geometry of bent arms, a figure that is also repeated as a shadow silhouette. The gesture of the arm propped on the hip is a telling symbol of the German army’s resurgence after 1945. Diese Aufnahme ist eine Variante des Motivs in den Buchausgaben von “Die Deutschen”, in dem der Weisegestus des links stehenden Soldaten die Profilfigur des Offiziers mit Filzhut überragt. Hier spielt Burri mit der Geometrie abgewinkelter Arme, eine Figur, die sich auch als Schattensilhouette wiederholt. Die Geste des in die Hüfte gestützen Arms ist ein sprechendes Symbol für das Wiedererstarken des deutschen Heeres nach 1945.
