Galerie Madoura, Vallauris. Acquired from the latter by the family of the present owner, then by descent. "In 1954 Jacqueline Roque entered the artist's life. Picasso had met Jacqueline at the Madoura pottery where she worked as a hostess, during the summer of 1952. That year, the stays at the Ramié pottery seemed episodic and the ceramic production less sustained. Nevertheless, remarkable works were produced. In January, he created a series on the theme of the artist and his model, following a similar series undertaken in drawing. [In 1955, Picasso acquired a new residence in the South of France, a large villa in the hills above Cannes called 'La Californie'. [...] Working from now on in 'La Californie', he had the pieces delivered to him to decorate and returned to the pottery for the firing or made the matrices for his new series of ceramic prints." By settling in 'La Californie', the painter gave himself over to ceramics and explored this new medium. With the collaboration of the Ramié couple, he produces all kinds of ceramics. As this was a craft production, and therefore subject to results that were sometimes unforeseen, some dishes or vases came out of the kiln with a color or shape that was different from the one expected. Picasso appropriated these pieces, decorating them by hand or signing them. Our work is precisely in this line of unique pieces. The enhancement with oxides by the hand of the master differentiates it from the 200 copies in white and red earthenware, forming, as for them, simple editions.
