MACROBIUS (Aurelius Theodosius). Opera. London, Tho. Dring and Car. Harper, 1694. In-8 contemporary vellum, smooth spine, calligraphic title (Contemporary binding).
(16) ff. including engraved frontispiece and title, 491 pp., (28) ff.
This edition is an "English counterfeit of the recension made on 3 Leiden manuscripts in 1670" (Oberlé): this collection gathers the two main treatises of Macrobius, a neo-Platonic philosopher of the end of the 4th century: The Dream of Scipio and The Saturnalia.
In the seven books of the latter treatise, in the literary genre of philosophical banquets, twelve interlocutors discuss the Roman religious festivals (saturnalia), giving multiple information on the use of food and its properties; in the second book, there is a description of Roman meals and their use of wine.
A fine copy, from the Kilian Fritsch library (1993, n° 30).
Faint but not severe wetness on a few leaves. Small brown spots. Vellum slightly rubbed.
Oberlé, Bachique, 30 (this copy).
