ARBUTHNOT (Jean). Essay on the nature and choice of food, according to the different constitutions. First French edition of this famous treatise on dietetics (the second part is entitled Practical Rules on Diet), translated by Boyer de Prébandier. The first edition had appeared in London in two parts in 1731 and 1732. A man of letters, the Scotsman Jean Arbuthnot (ca. 1667-1735) was a friend of Swift, Bolingbroke and Pope.
