Kunsthalle Rotterdam, Ghent 1999, ill. p. 9 (this print) The photograph of the German-born artist Karin Kluth was taken in Paris, where she and her later husband, the Dutch artist Ernst van Leyden, were associated with the artistic circles around Marc Chagall, Ossip Zadkine and Francis Picabia. Man Ray's elegant portrait en profil of the sophisticated, self-confident young woman, who had an exhibition that year in Galerie Georges Bernheim, appeared on the cover of the magazine Paris-Montparnasse, edited by Henri Broca, in the issue of 15 November 1929.
