Morocco, Tetouan or Tangier, 19th century In gilded metal composed of a row of tubular elements and seven multi-level pendants set with glass cabochons, all strung on cotton thread. Eight ovoid elements with gadroons alternate with coral beads. The seven pendants are arranged in five levels: two florets known as Gharnati ("of Granada"), a sun disk and a crescent moon, with a drop-shaped end. Length: 74 cm. Height of a pendant : 18 cm Gross weight : 240g. A metal-gilt wedding necklace lebba, Morocco, 19th century This necklace was part of the Moroccan bride's set. The different motifs of its pendants have a strong symbolism: the crescent moon and the pearl it surrounds can refer to an eyebrow and an iris, a talismanic shape that protects from the evil eye. The moon is also a symbol of fertility and the sun to the radiation. The presence of the pomegranate motif recalls the Andalusian origin of the jewelry artisans exiled to Morocco. Provenance: Collection of Mrs. R., resident in Morocco, from 1950 to 1970.
