Jan Martszen de Jonge
A Prisoner after the Battle
Oil on copper. 15.3 x 22 cm (oval).
With a barely legible signature lower right..
Provenance
German private collection.
Jan Martszen the Younger was a nephew and pupil of Esaias van de Velde and teacher of Jan Asselijn. He resided in Haarlem for the majority of his life. This oval painting bears identical dimensions and a similar battle scene to a signed work dated 1629 that is also painted on copper and listed in the RKD database under the number 173642, to which it may have been a pendant.
