Dirck de Vries, a native of Friesland, was active as a genre and still life painter in Venice from 1590 to 1612. Depictions of the Venetian carnival were also part of his repertoire, such as this masked ball scene dating from around 1600 (auctioned by Sotheby's London, 12th June 1995, lot 226).
