Half-leather binding of the time with gilt spine title and some spine gilt (a bit rubbed). Rare first edition. - Henze IV, 579 - Sabin 69614. - Published even before his "Journey to Paraguay" (1835). - In 1818, the Swiss physician and naturalist Rengger (1795-1832), accompanied by his colleague Marcel Lonchamp, had traveled to the little-known Paraguay for research purposes; until 1825, they were not allowed to leave the country, which was sealed off from the outside world under dictator Francia. Rengger used the time for extensive travel and study. - "His main concern was the study of fauna and flora, the building of collections; in addition, he paid attention to the physical-geographical as well as the social and ethnographic conditions" (Henze). - Foxing, title stamped in margin. *
