Les Baigneuses de Saint-Guénolé, also known as Baigneuses bretonnes dans les rochers or Le Bain was executed in 1913. At that time, the artist was at the peak of a brilliant career and was included in state collections and foreign museums. Our work is a studio composition, probably done in his Paris studio. It is unlikely that the subject was done on the ground, the summer in Bigouden country. The Bathers of Saint-Guénolé was the subject of numerous studies for two larger paintings, one exhibited at the Salon de la Société des Beaux-Arts in 1914, then acquired by the Galerie Bernheim Jeune.
