Volume one (the only one published), one volume in-8, old rose paperback cover, illustrated by the author, Cherbourg, 1880, printed by Ch. Syffert, rue Thiers, 7 (the cover bears another address: "rue de la Duché, 12" and the date of 1881), 258 pp, with 3 plates out of text, one of which marked "plate III" the other two unnumbered and folding, sketch of the ostrea gigas Thunberg and a large folded map of the coast of Chekiang and Chusan islands drawn by the author.
Extremely rare first edition, probably published by the author. Complete
Fauvel is to be remembered as one of the most eminent French orientalists, just behind the Henri Cordier, or the Abel-Rémusat.
Good general condition, notebook with few foxing. Minor flaws, spine unstained.
Provenance: Albert Fauvel's family papers remained in his descendants, which had been kept by his mother.
