GEORGES ROMNEY (1734 - 1802) Portrait of Sir William Garrow Canvas 75 x 61 cm Provenance: Mrs. RD Hudson, Danesfield, Marlow, No. 240 of the inventory. Villa Paloma: -Inventory 1950; -Inventory 1934 Bibliography: H. Ward and W. Roberts: Georges Romney, 1904, vol.II, p. 59, reproduced in NB. Son of David Garrow, William was born in Hadley in 1755. He was admitted to the bar and pleaded at Old Bailey. He was knighted in 1812; Advocate General in 1813-17, when he became Baron of Exchequer, an office from which he resigned in 1832; He died at Pegwell cottage near Ramsgated on 24 September 1840. His portrait, painted in 1785, was paid by himself in August of the same year for 20 guines.
