PAIR OF MAGNIFICENT ORNAMENTAL VASES WITH FINE ENAMEL DÉCOR. Vienna. Date: Around 1890. Maker/Designer: In the manner of Karl Rössler. Technique: Ivory with wooden corpus, silver with coloured enamel décor, different gem stones. Description: Each slender shaped vase on a square shaped plinth with a straight, conically expanding body. The neck is designed correspondingly and is topped by a tapered lid. All sides decorated with Renaissance-style à jour silver inlays. The central fields of the large high-oval ornaments with cheerful bacchantes. On the corners of the vase shoulder four fully sculpted female figurines sitting with flower festoons in their hands. The lid crowned by a female figurine in antique garments and a torch in her right hand. Measurement: Height each 66cm. Mark: Once marked with french "Cygne" (Tardy p.208). Cites on hand. Karl Rössler, who was born in 1854 and later registered as a jeweller and goldsmith, belonged to a small group of craftsmen who specialised in finely painted enamelled and hardstone-set showpieces in the Mannerist and Renaissance style. Together with Hermann Ratzersdorfer and Hermann Böhm, Rössler became one of the leading representatives of the goldsmith's art in late 19th century Vienna.
