JAPAN, Arita, Edo period (1615-1868), late 17th century. Large circular covered porcelain tureen, made for the European market, decorated in the Transitional style of the 17th century with a mountain, water and garden scene in cobalt blue underglaze. The cover is in the shape of a dog. Bears an old label on the reverse: DUVAUCHEL, rue de l'Université, 34, Magasin de thés, porcelaines de Chine et Curiosité. H. 35,5 cm. Diameter : 31 cm. Note : the Transitional decoration is first Chinese and was very fashionable from the first half of the 17th century. When the Dutch merchants traded with Japan because of the closure of the Chinese market in the second half of the 17th century, the Japanese potters took over this very fashionable style.
