Evening dress in black velvet. Bustier heart embroidered with a floral pattern in jet beads. Skirt in black silk tulle on black silk satin. Size highlighted with silk roses. Signed " BALENCIAGA 10, AVENUE GEORGE V, PARIS" Circa 1938 (tiny holes in the tulle, restored) This model is one of the first created by Cristobal Balenciaga in Paris. Indeed, the Civil War of 1936 had forced him to leave Spain and close his three fashion houses. At first he tried to take refuge in London and work at Worth and Rouff. But in July 1937, he moved to Paris and opened a house at 10, avenue George V under the name of Balenciaga, thanks to a patron and some French fabric manufacturers. He presented his first Parisian collection in August 1937, which was an immediate success
