An Islamic mortar
Cast bronze with silver damascene, the reddish brown patina almost entirely obscured by verdigris. Of tapering form with protruding rim. Decorated with lotus buds alternating with inscribed cartouche motifs. The rims with calligraphy. With a crack and a small hole on the edge of the base. H 16.2, D 20 cm, weight c. 8.3 kg.
Attributed to Khorasan / Iran, 12th - 13th C.
