August Albert Zimmermann, Two resting hunters in front of the Watzmann massif. Oil on canvas. 32.5 x 40.4 cm. Framed. Zimmermann was especially appreciated for his sublime depictions of the Upper Bavarian and Lower Austrian mountain worlds. Two hunters hold a dialogue with nature and direct their eyes to the imposing backdrop of the snow-covered Watzmann massif. Two further versions of this motif were created, one in German private ownership, the other in the possession of the Freital Municipal Collections. We would like to thank Professor Dr. Helmut Börsch-Supan, Berlin, for his kind information in cataloging this work. Literature on the comparative painting: Rolf Günther and Ilka Melzer, Die Stiftung Friedrich Pappermann Freital: eine Privatsammlung Dresdner Kunst, Freital 2003, in the catalog section. Provenance: Collection Johan Christian Clausen Dahl (1788-1857), inscribed on verso of stretcher; private property, Berlin. Taxation: differential taxation (VAT: Margin Scheme).
