Carl Robert Kummer, The Faraglioni in front of Capri. Oil on painting cardboard. (1870). 33,5 x 48,3 cm. Signed lower right. Numbered on verso on old sticker "241". Framed. At setting evening sun in the Marina Piccola on Capri four fishermen pull a boat ashore, others climb the steps to the Castello Antico. In the background, the three Faraglioni, the famous cone-shaped limestone formations, glow pink in the glow of the setting sun. Kummer's last great journey, accompanied by his wife, had taken him via Trieste to Cairo at the beginning of 1868. After only a short stay, he took a steamer to Messina in Sicily, reviving youthful memories of his earlier sojourns in Italy. The next stops were Rome, Florence, and Venice, where there was a reunion with Frederick Nerly, who had settled there. "Only my dear Capri; Sorrento and Ischia I had to leave, as the weather was not inviting to a sea voyage for ladies." Although he was not granted the opportunity to revisit all of his places of longing, Kummer's enthusiasm for the Italian landscape, which was to characterize his later work, was rekindled. Apart from his memories, he was able to draw on a broad collection of earlier sketches; thus this depiction is probably also based on a drawing from the early 1830s. Nüdling 274.
