Eugène Joseph Lejeune, Gallant scene in the park.
Oil on canvas, doubled. 34,3 x 28,3 cm (in oval). Signed lower left. Framed.
A young courtier is courting the favor of two distinguished ladies. Pining he follows them through a park. The front lady in pink already seems to give in to temptation and is about to turn to the young gallant, which the second lady takes note of with a mocking look. She does not want to be lured by his advances, will keep her pick flowers nicely for herself! The other one, however, which seems to the flirt, carries her charms, symbolized by a flower thread, openly to the show. Her overgarment stands open and is held together only by a narrow ribbon. The young man is probably inclined to accept the blue flowers she hands him backwards.
