Gottfried Eichler the Elder, Self-portrait. Oil on canvas, doubled. (Circa 1706). 56 x 51.2 cm. Framed. //rg/73,5/4 In all probability, this portrait is a self-portrait of the painter Gottfried Eichler the Elder. This is indicated by the unrelated, energetic look and the renunciation of any idealization, which was often included in commissioned works. Thus, the scars of a survived smallpox disease are clearly visible on the forehead and chin, a kind of realism that, according to Börsch-Supan, was close to the ten years older painter colleague Johann Kupezky. From 1696-1703 Eichler was a pupil of Johann Heiss in Augsburg, after which he moved to Rome, where he studied under Benedetto Luti and Carlo Maratta. There he also became friends with Kupezky, with whom he then went to Vienna around 1706 before finally settling in Augsburg in 1713. The self-portrait may have been painted during his stay in Vienna and depicts the painter as about thirty years old. He is dressed in a blue brocade robe, his overcoat matching the red fur trim of his cap. With a written expert opinion by Professor Dr. Helmut Börsch-Supan, Berlin, dated 5.10.2010 (copy). Taxation: differential taxed (VAT: Margin Scheme).
