Accidents
The mountain was formerly called Frakmünt ("the broken mountain"). Legend has it that the body and soul of Pontius Pilate lay in a lake at the top. For this reason, the mountain was cursed for several centuries and inherited the name of the governor of Judea. Under penalty of imprisonment (or even death), climbing Pilatus was forbidden: the presence of intruders risked angering Pontius Pilate, whose terrible wrath unleashed storms and floods on Lucerne and the surrounding area, according to legend. It was not until the end of the 16th century that the fear of Mount Pilatus disappeared.
