Galignani's New Guide to Paris of 1827 recommends an optician to tourists: "Chevallier 1, Tour de l'horloge du Palais, opposite the Marché aux Fleurs, Optician to the King and the Royal Family, inventor of the "sight keeper", inventor of the opera glasses called cylinders and isocentric glasses for reading, writing and seeing at a distance, for which patents were granted to him. He also invented sundials for different latitudes, the mechanical barometer, the Saccharimeter, and the Galameter... In 1842 the company was moved to 15 rue de Pont-Neuf, then to 15 Place du Pont neuf, sold to his daughter and son-in-law, and became the "Maison de l'Ingénieur Chevallier", a name that was retained in the 20th century.
