Mucha was a close friend of the Freund-Deschamps family. The Deschamps brothers were French industrialists established in Vieux Jeand'heurs (Meuse), specialized in the production of pigments. This work is a study for an advertisement for Deschamps blue, a brightening additive for laundry detergents (reproduced in Jack Rennert and Alain Weill; Alphonse Mucha, all posters and panels, Upssala, Hjert & Hjert, 1984).
The date of 1898 which appears on our study is that of the dedication. Mucha used to dedicate old drawings to relatives.
