Autograph poem signed "Théodore de Banville", Petites odes. L'Immortelle, [1888]; 2 1/2 pages small in-4.
Witty response to Daudet's novel, L'Immortel (1888), which violently attacked the Academy.
This poem of 9 quatrains was collected in Sonnailles et clochettes (Charpentier, 1890).
"Muse, Daudet is not right;
His justice is only apparent,
For your divine flowering
Lives very well with the Forty.
The Academy is a phoenix
Laughing like Cypris in the island;
And certainly it has Monsieur X,
But it has Leconte de Lisle "
