Provencal school around 1650
Saint Sebastian and Saint Roch before the Ascension of the Virgin
Canvas
155 x 98 cm
This painting can be compared to several works of the Provencal school of the mid 17th century, such as The Virgin and Child with Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian preserved in the church of Saint Bach (Suze la Rousse), or the Assumption of the Virgin between Saint Sebastian and Saint Roch preserved in the church of Notre Dame de Bouchet.
Given its iconographic bias, its design and its still archaic technique, it would seem that its author is to be linked to a French provincial artistic home (Provence), situated at the crossroads of Nordic and Italian influences.
