Dogon statuette, Mali
Wood
H. 33 cm
Provenance :
- Galerie Guilhem Montagut, Barcelona
Standing on a circular base, this anthropomorphic figure is distinguished by the purity of its features and its great expressive strength. It is completely naked, with both hands raised to the sky and palms open. Usually interpreted as a supplication to the god Amma for rain, this gesture is found in Soninke, Tellem and Dogon sculpture. Particular attention has been paid to the rhythm of the forms and volumes. The bent legs, the rounded buttocks, the prominent chest and umbilicus underline the upward movement of the figure. As if taken from life, the figure seems inhabited by an invocative force. Carved with great sensitivity, this work is a beautiful testimony to Dogon art.
