DIDEROT (Denis). UNIVERSAL DICTIONARY OF MEDICINE, SURGERY, CHEMISTRY, BOTANY, ANATOMY, PHARMACY, NATURAL HISTORY... Paris, Brisson, David l'aîné, Durand, 1746-1748. 6 volumes in-folio, marbled calfskin, spine decorated, red edges (period binding). First French edition, dedicated to the Count of Maurepas, translated by Denis Diderot, Marc-Antoine Eidous with François-Vincent Toussaint and revised, corrected and enlarged by the physician Julien Busson (1717-1781) of this immense dictionary of practical medicine gathering all the best that had been written on the subject. It is much larger than the English edition (1743-1745) which consisted of only three volumes. The copy is complete with 68 VERY NICE folded plates (6/7 and 9/10 of volume III on the same sheet). They represent medical instruments, anatomical views, surgical operations of odontology, ophthalmology or amputations. Small accidents to the binding, otherwise a good copy. (Tchemerzine II, 917) (Garrison Morton 6799).
