[Sixteenth-century book]. APPIAN (Alexandrine). Des guerres des Romains livres XI traduicts en françois par Claude de Seyssel... In Paris, by P. du pré, 1569. Two parts in one vol. in-folio, [12]-293-32 f., contemporary havana calf, spine ribbed, boards decorated with a double framing of fillets with 8 large angular fleurons and motto in central medallion, all gilt, edges gilt (spine and corners renewed, qq. scratches and stains to boards, sustained wetness affecting the whole volume).
Rare provenance, from the Maugis family (Berry), with the motto in Greek: Mogis alla pote. From this dispersed collection, which one imagines to be valuable, two other works are known to date: Oeuvres d'Ambroise Paré (Paris, Buon, 1575; Sotheby's Paris sale, 18 May 2010, lot 11); and le Jardin de santé (Paris, Le Noir, 1539; Rés. de la Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève)
(USTC 24445; Adams A-1354).
